So, does this mean Russia is winning? Simply, no. Ukraine maintains the military initiative and is dictating the time and place of operations. Ukraine continues to weaken Russia's ability to sustain its operations by attacking logistics, headquarters, airbases and naval bases.

Russia is increasingly reliant on North Korea and Iran for military materiel and is hoping China will start to supply some.

The Ukrainian military has yet to get its Abrams tanks from the US, many of its leopard tanks and its F16 fighters. It has only just received ATACMs missiles.

As Russia gets weaker militarily, Ukraine gets stronger, but this remains a David vs Goliath struggle and the Russian Goliath maintains significant strength.

The real question is can Ukraine continue to manage significant casualties, and with the war between Israel and Hamas, maintain wider international support?

It is that war, thousands of miles away, that is Putin's best hope of bringing the Ukraine war to a stalemate and therefore, from his perspective, "winning".
