not 100% on the history, but my understanding was that Vietnam were living under 3 successive oppressive/colonial powers. In this manner the country was fighting for it's independence. Ukraine didn't have to fight Russia. It was given it's independence. The path their leaders have chosen has been a disaster.
(Countries sometimes cease to exist for extended periods of time. If the people remain, they can recover.)
