Ukraine detains 'ex-official turned FSB spy' in Kyiv

Ukraine's security services (SBU) says it has detained a former Ukrainian official turned Russian spy in Kyiv.

The SBU said the man, who worked in the energy ministry among others until 2014, had joined the Russian FSB after years of praising the Kremlin's aggressive policies against Ukraine.

Using mobile phones, he would speak with an FSB contact who organised his "subversive activities" against Ukraine, a statement read.

"The Russian agent also cooperated with the terrorist Pasichnyk, to whom he provided 'expert' recommendations on intensifying repression against Ukrainian patriots in the temporarily occupied Luhansk," the SBU said, referring to Leonid Pasichnyk, a former SBU member who now serves as the Moscow-appointed head of the Russian-occupied Luhansk region.

The man's apartment was raided, the SBU said, during which a number of what it says are incriminating documents were recovered.

"A complex forensic psychological and linguistic examination confirmed that the documentary materials prepared by the suspect on the order of the FSB are directed against the state security of Ukraine," it said.

The man faces up to 15 years in prison.

It also shared a photo, purporting to show the man's arrest.
