Totally forgetting that former USSR countries are now independent and making up their own minds about NATO, the EU and other decisions.

Independent = A highly motivated fighting force in Ukraine with a full grip on reality.

Totalitarian = an unmotivated, undisciplined, unreliable force from Russia, so bad that Putin has to hire mercenaries, and in denial about the extent of losses. The Russian admission of the loss of the Mariupol is rare and unexpected. The best of their fleet has gone down...even if they argue that it's not because of the Ukrainians, at best the Russians are incompetent!
