    Nah, not really.

    There are multiple high-level sources, all talking about NATO's expansion being the main issue for Russia.

    Stoltenberg stated that Russia's invasion happened because of fears of NATO expansion.

    David Arakhamia (head of Zelensky's party) stated that one major thing that Russia was asking for from Ukraine during March/April 2022 negotiations, was for Ukraine to remain neutral and non-aligned with Nato.

    William Burns (who is now the director of the CIA) stated the following back in 2008: NATO expansion to Ukraine crosses Moscow’s security “redlines” and “could potentially split the country in two, leading to violence or even, some claim, civil war, which would force Russia to decide whether to intervene.”

    Nothing about rebuilding the Soviet Empire. Russia considers NATO's expansion as an existential-level security threat.
