Massive internet outages in Russia may be the result of Moscow's efforts to established its "sovereign internet" system, military analysts have said.
A widespread outage yesterday saw access to websites on the local .ru domain temporarily inaccessible.
The Institute for the Study of War said several major Russian telecoms firms were impacted by the outage.
Russia's digital ministry put the outage down to a technical issue.
But according to the ISW, Russian anti-censorship organsation Net Freedoms Project and other opposition outlets have reported that Russia is trying to establish its "sovereign internet" system and disconnect the country from the global web.
