This war started even before Putin grabbed power, during Yeltsyn times. Imperial movement started with first Chechen war in mid 1990's and fazed out. Nemtsov was supposed to take over from Yeltsyn was against it but Putin re-ignited it to grab power by bombing Moscow flats and started 2nd Chechen war. Nemtsov in 2015 said "Putin is a sick man, he will invade Ukraine no matter what, Russian's will come home in body bags and Ukraine will be our eternal enemy". How true was he? Putin killed him soon after.
