During his interview with ex-Fox News presenter Tucker Carlson, Vladimir Putin claimed his invasion of Ukraine was due to NATO expansion.
But speaking to broadcasters this morning, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak labelled the claim "clearly ridiculous".
He said: "Russia conducted an illegal, unprovoked invasion of Ukraine. I'm proud that the UK has stood strongly with Ukraine from the beginning.
"I was there earlier this year, the first foreign leader to visit. It was my first visit of the year to announce significant military support to Ukraine and also a broader security relationship with them."
He went on to say "we can’t let this type of behaviour go unchecked".
