The death of Putin critic Alexei Navalny was "murder", Russian newspaper editor and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Dmitry Muratov has said.
Mr Muratov also said he believed prison conditions had led to
his demise.
Leonid Volkov, Mr Navalny's chief of staff, said earlier that the statement from the prison service could be interpreted as a "confession" that they deliberately killed Mr Navalny, although his entourage is yet to verify the information.
On 1 September last year, Mr Muratov was declared by the Russian authorities to be a "foreign agent" for promoting "opinions that are aimed at forming a negative attitude towards Russia's interior and foreign policy".
