World leaders blame Putin for Navalny death

Leaders from across the world have been reacting to the death of Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny and holding President Vladimir Putin responsible.

Yesterday, US leader Joe Biden said the Russian authorities were "going to tell their own story" but "Putin is responsible".

America's Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Mr Navalny's death in a Russian prison and the fixation and fear of one man "only underscores the weakness and rot at the heart of the system that Putin has built".

"Russia is responsible for this," he said.

French President Emmanuel Macron said in "today's Russia, free spirits are put in the Gulag and sentenced to death".

And German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said in a statement he met Mr Navalny in Berlin when he was trying to recover in Germany from the poisoning attack and "the great courage it takes to return to his country".

"And he has probably now paid for this courage with his life," he added.

Meanwhile, Ukraine's President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told reporters it was "obvious" Mr Navalny was "killed by Putin".

He said: "Putin does not care who dies as long as he keeps his position. And that is why he should not keep anything."

Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson said: "The Russian authorities, and President Putin personally, are responsible for Alexei Navalny no longer being alive."

Elsewhere, UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres said he was shocked and urged a "full, credible and transparent investigation".

Mr Navalny, who campaigned against official corruption and organised major anti-government protests, had been behind bars since January 2021.

He was arrested on his return from Germany, where he had been recuperating after a nerve agent poisoning that he blamed on the Kremlin.

Since the start of his imprisonment, the opposition leader had remained a thorn in the side of Mr Putin via scathing attacks that his associates continued to post on social media.
