I agree with you that the then USSR put pressure on the Warsaw Pact countries
to join the Warsaw Pact in the same way that the USA put pressure on Nato
Countries (and still does) to join NATO......its Geopolitics mate not morality!

By the way , the EU has an interest in all its members being in NATO
to protect EU development aid (particuluarly those who receive large EU grants annually )


At present there is pressure by the USA on Aus to back the USA in its economic
war against China even though its not in our immediate economic interests to do so,
our economy is over 30% dependant of Chinese trade.

Keep in mind that The Warsaw Pact was cobbled together in 1954
in response to NATO (the year that the USSA gave Crimea to the Ukraine)
while NATO was formed by the USA immediately after WW2
