War could break out this week, Armenian PM claims

War may break out this week in another region with significant Russian interests, according to Armenia's prime minister.

Nikol Pashinyan has claimed Azerbaijan will wage war again if he does not compromise with Baku on returning some strategic territories controlled by Armenia since the early 1990s.

According to TASS news agency, Mr Pashinyan told residents in a border area: "Now we can leave here, let's go and tell [Azerbaijan] that no, we are not going to do anything.

"This means that at the end of the week a war will begin."

Both Armenia and Azerbaijan continue to occupy lands internationally recognised as part of the other's territory.

Armenia, traditionally seen as an ally of Russia, has increasingly tried to build ties with the West since 2018, when Mr Pashinyan came into power.

Relations have become increasingly strained between Moscow and Yerevan, with Armenia refusing to support the invasion of Ukraine and openly discussing the possibility of joining the EU
