but China is so opaque and it's possible to imagine many possible attitudes China could have to the war

initially China would've been very keen to see a country suported by the west beaten by their ally
perhpas they saw the war as a test run in a way for Taiwan ?
But China has already got cheap energy out of this war and very likely to continue for them .
BUT , as you are aware , there could be an advantage to China in seeing russia collapsing in turmoil too - am thinking about those northern provinces russia stole in the 1870's potentially being taken back by China

and if the global economy were to weaken significantly it would seem to me that China would like to see an end to the war

personally , I suspect China are still very much keeping an open mind on what final stance to take based on what happens in the future .....everything points to that IMO and they have always proclaimed neutrality (like MOOK) ......at the same time as describing russia as a freind without limmits (LOL) .......ie. hedging their bets !
How Chinese would that be ?!!!
