Much of the opposition to the security assistance in both the House and Senate has come from Republicans with close ties to Mr Trump, a Ukraine aid sceptic who has stressed "America First" policies as he seeks a second term.

Opposition to the bill remained, with Trump-ally Marjorie Taylor Greene calling on Mr Johnson to resign.
But the Senate's Democratic leader, Chuck Schumer, and Republican leader Mitch McConnell warned of dire consequences for the US and many of its allies if Russian President Vladimir Putin's aggression was left unchecked.
The pair worked with Mr Johnson to overcome seemingly intractable Republican opposition to the Ukraine aid.

so ....we have a division in the republian party between (trump +MAGA's) and mainstream rep conservatives - particullarly their leaders
This passing of the bill was a big defeat for trump and a sign thatt the party was not going to be a rubber stamp for trump attitudes .......attitudes to Ukraine and national security issues at least anyway .
