I agree that there is a difference between "Boots on the Ground" colonialism such
as the Russian presence in the Ukraine now and the more subtle US form via
capital/financial markets and the role of the USD as a wealth extractive tool rather than the military.

Call it US economic imperialism if you want (I prefer to call it US style neo-colonialism ..
no boots on the ground but easy access to other countries wealth under the guise
of 'investment" but the gig is similar economically to that of the British Empire except
the Brits did it by brute force while the Yanks did it by "Giving an offer they couldn't refuse"
The Brits had the 18th-19th C big houses while the Yanks have Wall St and less obvious Billionaires.

Of course we think that we benefit from US investment but not half as much as the Yanks do
and when Whitlam hinted that he might "buy back the farm" ...the rest is history...eh?

Closer to home , lets look at the 2016 US ownership of which we consider some of "our big corporations:
as an example of US economic imperialism (perhaps you prefer that to US neo-colonialism) :

Since 2016 this US share of above corporations has grown bigger . especially in our Big 4 Banks.

So back to the Ukraine War.

IMO its relevant to consider US economic interests (its economic imperialism if you wish)
in looking at the Ukraine longer term. If Russia controls it like it does Belarus, then US
investment (US economic imperialism) is not welcome nor would it be secure but of course
if the Ukraine ultimately freed itself from Russia and say became a member of both NATO
(for security) & the EEC for economically, then Uncle Sam would be in there like Flynn, IMO.

Despite apparently loosing the Iraq War, just look at the US booty there particuluarly in the
    petroleum sector.
