Ideologically the Ukraine and its peoples were right in aspiring to be both EC and NATO members. Unfortunately ideology alone was not enough to achieve that and the mistake made then was to underestimate Russia's resolve to prevent the Ukraine from joining the EC & NATO (particularly the latter) The" right thing to do/the good thing to do", while impressive in personal relations simply doesn't cut the mustard in Geopolitics particularly when there is a Great Power (a NUKE Power) involved. Only for Russia being Nuke armed to the teeth with global reach hypersonic delivery systems, then, IMO, NATO would have been in the Ukraine boots and all years ago and probably in Russia. So while the weak may spruik "Right/Good" and associated moral values, war is all about military might ; not morality . Just to give an example of another war: its hard to argue that Israel is doing the right thing in Gaza by killing over 24,000 Gazan women & children but that does not deter them.
