I reject that totally! The West does NOT "fail to see" this. The West made a conscious decision to risk the lives of billions of people on Earth in order to achieve its ambition of surrounding Russia and turning the Black Sea into a NATO lake hoping that Russia would be too scared to protect itself. The USA/NATO/EU/UK are doing exactly the same today. They are deliberately provoking Nuclear War hoping that Russia will not respond in the way the USA/NATO would undoubtedly respond if they were backed into the corner they are backing Russia in.
If you look objectively at your sentence, the one I have quoted above, you will see that it's nonsense. Since the days when humans first started declaring borders many millennia ago, they have clearly understood what acts threaten the security of their neighbours. The USA/NATO knew exactly what it was doing when it invited Ukraine/Georgia to join NATO. Indeed many USA/NATO experts and Administrators warned that this was provoking Russia into a war. The USA/NATO knew exactly what it was doing when it groomed, funded & mobilized the Nazi/Bandera nationalists and orchestrated the coups in Ukraine and Georgia. NATO is doing the same AGAIN in Georgia as we speak.
So please, stop painting the West as poor innocent children who simply don't understand the consequences of their actions. They know exactly what they're provoking and would rather provoke nuclear war than risk losing their hegemony but lose it THEY MUST, for the sake of humanity!
