Russia never had air dominance, shoulder mounted anti-aircraft missiles has stopped them flying freely over the theatre. They tend to stay in their own sky and launch glide bombs. These are big and destructive but not very accurate.
Things are about to get worse. I think Ukraine has been setting the battlefield for the F 16s [60 promised?] by concentrating on taking out SAM batteries which seem pretty bad at self defence. OK, the F 16 is 40 years old but it is the weapons system they can mount that matters and they will be best in theatre. An anti radiation missile launched by an F 16 is much more capable than the same missile bodged to be launched by a MIG. As the SAMs are destroyed the F 16s will be able to roam more widely. IF air dominance is achieved US combined force tactics will dominate.
BTW How do we know that they don't already have some flying out of Poland taking out the SAM sites? Such things are never telegraphed.
