Russia were offering to withdraw as part of the 2022 peace deal. They wanted commitment on minsk agreements plus neutrality.
They switched to a war of attrition. Slow tactical gains prepared to trade off territory to conserve forces. The deal is worse now.
I suggest if there is another attempted deal it will be worse than this one for Ukraine.
