I thought he didn't ban elections just sensibly cancelled the one due in May given the state of emergency. He is pretty unpopular now given the mobilisation laws and backtracking on demobilisation of the guys who served on the front for years, he sacked Zaluzhny. Now would not be a good time for him to have an election.
Zelensky did manage to ban another political party though
