It's obvious isn't it that Putin never tried to capture Ukraine. What ARE his objectives, I wonder.

Clearly he miscalculated on the battlefield so could it be that his objective NOW is to keep fighting indefinitely knowing that he can't afford to "lose". Losing would mean that he stops fighting with no gains. That is, no NATO commitment to Ukrainian neutrality: so the whole invasion resulting in severe battle losses and economic sanctions is only in return for punishing Ukraine with death and destruction.

He can't afford that outcome so the war is likely to drag on for many years with massive losses on both sides and possibly the complete destruction of Ukraine.
