There are 2 possibilities:
(a) the Ukraine mis-estimated Russia's resolve to ensure that NATO did not encroach on its
. Ukrainian Border....
(b) That the Ukraine was determined to join NATO despite Russian resolve to prevent that.

If (a) than the Ukraine made a mistake

If (b) then the Ukraine has to accept the consequences of its determination to join NATO
and it simply has to win this war to restore its pre 2014 borders....
IMO that is more not likely than likely to happen.

Now let's revert to pre feb 2022.

Had the Ukraine not changed its constitution in 2019 to join NATO and had
the current Government not re-affirmed that in the General election, would
Russia have invaded and/or would the Ukraine be better off today?

IMO it would.

Now that's not being Pro Russia or Pro Ukraine , just a neutral comment
by a Political Realist.
