I understand your position fine. Along such a huge length of frontline, a few km can be significant. Donetsk doesn't get shelled as much as it used to... since a few km have been moved west there. Probably insignificant for you in Sydney, but very significant to the people living there. Also.probably significant for the normal Ukrainians being forced into hopeless positions in combat zones.
