Northern Ireland has elected Sinn Fein (a Republican Party)
but Northern Ireland is still in the UK regardless of the populist
vote for a union with the Republic.
Taiwan's ruling party does not have a policy of independence
while Sinn Fein has a policy since 1909 of a 32 County Ireland.
By the way Taiwan has been a state democracy
since 1996. Before that it was a dictatorship since
1949 and before that a colony of Japan from 1895 to 1945.
China has repeatedly warned Taiwan that a declaration
of independence means war and no mainstream Taiwanese
party has challenged that (yet) and by the look of the Ukraine ,
Syria and Gaza, they are not likely to do so in the future IMO.
So its not what one might call a mature democracy
and neither has it declared its independence from China
for above reasons. Technically a war between China and Taiwan
would be a civil war.
But the main game on this thread is the Ukrainian War
and US/Taiwan relations is only relevant to the extent that
it takes US focus off the region to concentrate on the Ukraine and of
course Israel.
IMO the upcoming presidential debates will tease out both
Republican & Democrat policies with respect to ongoing/further
US support for the Ukraine and those who think that this is
not a Proxy US/Russian war, just wait and listen carefully
to the tenor of the debate.
