russia never seeked to change their borders. in fact, they tried to cooperate with nato. going as far as LETTING NATO USE RUSSIAN MILITARY BASES, LOCATED INSIDE RUSSIA, to move stuff (and most likely troops) in/out of Afghanistan.

can you imagine any nato country letting the russians use their military bases like that?

all russia received in return for their good will gestures - is more nato expansion, missiles closer to their borders, increased nato efforts to decrease the russian sphere of influence, as per stoltenberg
