there's a little myth, about how when european explorers landed in the various places for the first time (north south americas, australia etc), the natives didn't understand where they came from. the appearance of the huge ships was so foreign to the natives, that they couldn't see those huge vessels that were right in front of them
perceptual blindness it's called. the myth above may not be real. but perceptual blindness certainly is.
