hmmm well that is an an extremely contorted argument. To keep peace after destabilization... this was an American modus operadi back in the 60's. UN hasn't recognized Crimea as part of Russia.

    Crimea:
Invasion: Russia's actions in Crimea in early 2014 included the deployment of troops, the occupation of key infrastructure, and the blockade of Ukrainian military bases. These actions can be characterized as an invasion because they involved the use of military force to take control of the region

Annexation: Following the military occupation, Russia held a controversial and widely disputed referendum in Crimea, after which it formally annexed the territory, declaring it part of the Russian Federation. This annexation was not recognized by Ukraine or most of the international community and is considered illegal under international law.

Both were illegal in the eyes of the UN. Putin was getting away with it, because no one felt the risk of enforcement was worthwhile, poor Ukraine was left alone. This is what happens when you stand back and give into criminal activity, it gets worse.
