Ukraine detains energy minister amid corruption crackdown

The latest to be detained as part of Ukraine's sweeping corruption crackdown is one of the country's energy ministers.

Ukrainian prosecutors said this morning that law enforcement authorities had detained one of the country's four deputy energy ministers and others - claiming they were receiving part of a $500,000 (£391,000) bribe.

"According to the investigation, the suspects organised a scheme to remove the mining equipment of the state coal mining enterprise from the combat zone in Donetsk region," the prosecutor's office said.

Ukraine has been dogged by corruption for years, but President Zelenskyy's government has actioned a crackdown that has seen many officials taking bribes arrested and given prison time.
