I agree, war has been a tragedy for both sides and the
best strategy in 2013-14 would have been a negotiated
settlement.
Russia was never going to allow NATO to effectively
control its prime naval port in the Crimea and of course
that was the tip of this war's cause.
To claim that the Ukraine had the legal right to join
NATO (given the current consequences post 2013)
is like the quadraplegic who maintained that he had
the right of way and proceeded across the level
crossing despite seeing the runaway train coming
thundering down the track.
Like "right" not remedying the quadriplegics predicament,
"right" won't "unscramble the egg" which is now the Ukraine.
It is said that we permanently learn by suffering and
if that's so, then the Ukraine is certainly on a steep learning curve!
I agree that there are benefits for some: USA, NATO, China, Arms manufacturers etc,
but certainly no benefits for the unfortunate peoples of the Ukraine of
which 20% have either migrated, been killed or maimed and the
industrialised East left an absolute wreck with the remainder of the
country functionally bankrupt. .
