As said a million times NATO wasnt invading, defensive org, that was being depleted until Putin renewed purpose and expanded because of attack. Putin wanted to return to a time where Ukraine was part of the Soviet Union or part of the Russian empire. Ukraine is a sovereign county free to choose its own path, could have chosen Russia, but what were the benefits? Its not up to Putin's ego.
