The Cold War and the existence of 2 Superpowers where neither power had a military advantage over the other was the only reason why Europe was relatively calm. Nothing to do with the UN.
Out of all eastern/central European countries, the crown jewel for the West was Ukraine. Unfortunately, for Ukraine, Russia also treated it as a crown jewel. There was never going to be an amicable shared custody over that land.
