The Ukrainian deserters brought all the equipment the separatists needed. There was no Ukrainian Army at the time. The volunteers were fighting the separatists in 2014 -2015.
In 2014, Chief of the General Staff Viktor Muzhenko described the situation as “an army literally in ruins. This miserable state of affairs was confirmed when around 70 percent of the Ukrainian forces stationed in Crimea swore allegiance to Moscow following Russia’s annexation of the peninsula. Around 14000 soldiers.
