Yanukovich was a Russian puppet, because:
- He signed a milestone 10bn dollar gas development deal with a European company, which would have resulted in Russia becoming less dependent on Russian gas.
- When faced with a choice between EU Association agreement and a Russian offer, he chose what would have benefitted the Ukrainians the most (more money for the economy, cheaper energy prices, as opposed to EU's offer, that came tied to a whole variety of austerity measures)

- After Yanukovich signed an agreement with the opposition agreeing to their demands in order to stop the coup-related violence, part of the opposition refused to honour the agreement, and issued death threats against Yanukovich, unless he left Kiev. I
