Russia's superior troop numbers on the front line have enabled it to try a different tactic to speed up Ukraine's casualty rate as well as speed up its own front line bulldozers. (This is according to Weeb Union):

It is suckering Ukraine into thinning out it's front defence line by increasing the number of offensive salients made by Russia. This theoretically makes it quicker and even easier to pick off outnumbered Ukrainian units while at the same time keeping individual concentrations of Russian troops to a sweet spot below a maximum target size for Ukraine to hit.
