The collapse of the Soviet Union was driven mostly by its oppressive, murderous, terrible economic mismanagement and anti-democratic practices against the countries and peoples it occupied.
Decades of political repression, forced deportations, and the brutal suppression of nationalist movements in Eastern Europe, such as the crushing of the Hungarian Revolution (1956) and the Prague Spring (1968), eroded support for Soviet rule. The imposition of collectivization, mass starvation events like the Holodomor, and the extensive use of Gulags alienated populations both within the USSR and its satellite states. Economic exploitation and the denial of political freedoms fostered widespread resistance and resentment, fueling underground dissent movements.
By the 1980s, economic stagnation, combined with increasing demands for political reform and independence, culminated in the disintegration of Soviet control, leading to its ultimate collapse in 1991.
