The American president also reportedly contacted Putin directly in a message and warned of "catastrophic consequences" if Russia used nuclear weapons.
Woodward also saidBiden called Chinese President Xi Jinping to speak about nuclear deterrence. According to the book, Biden and Xi agreed on the topic, and Xi said he would warn Putin.
"I don't take kindly to being threatened," Shoigu reportedly responded after Austin warned of the consequences of a nuclear strike.
"Mr. Minister," Austin said, according the book. "I am the leader of the most powerful military in the history of the world. I don't make threats."
