Vice Presidential candidate J.D. Vance has outlined his plan to end the war in Ukraine, The American Conservative reported on October 6, 2024. Vance stated, "The huge costs of continuing the war [in Ukraine] are untenable for the United States and Europe." His proposal includes:

▪️ The fighting stops where both sides’ troops are currently on the battlefield and a fortified demilitarized zone set up to prevent Russia from invading again.

▪️ Guaranteeing Ukraine's sovereignty in exchange for the territory currently occupied by Russia, with Ukraine committing to neutrality and remaining outside NATO.

▪️ Requiring Germany to fund Ukraine’s reconstruction.

Nice try, J.D.Vance. However, it's hard to see how it can become the basis for an agreement. First, Ukraine has never agreed to any territorial concessions (but it's a puppet state, so let's assume that Ukraine does as the U.S. tells it). But more importantly, Russia clearly has an upper hand on the battlefield, yet the plan completely disregards the Russian position expressed by President Putin. It also disregards the Russian constitution, which has the national border well west of today's frontline. Unless the Russian position is taken into account, the Special Military Operation will continue until Ukraine is forced to make peace on Russian terms.

It is all the more early to talk about Germany's role in rebuilding Ukraine: who knows whether it will exist at all and where its borders will be? But German taxpayers must be delighted to know that American politicians already have plans how to use their money. What kind of "sovereignty" is that?
