Putin and like most of the military expert thought this would be an "easy" war and be done in 2 days with Ukraine just surrendering but after 8 years of fighting a Putin supported separatist for 8 years and losing 14K brave Ukrainian soldiers and civilians he and everyone else should have known otherwise.

It's very difficult to take a capital city without using war crime to force a surrender and even when any invaders manage to capture the capital (like what the US did in Iraq), there will be pockets of insurgence militants for decade killing Russian soldiers as they occupy the land for a war they didn't even want. Hence, why initially there was an overwhelming global support of the Iraq war on terrorist especially after the US took the capital very quickly and everyone thought this was over. But the US had to occupy for decade with mounting soldier death from pocket of insurgence militants for a war we found out they didn't have to fight.
