It's not going so well for him because he thought making threats would be enough. He thought he'd capture the major cities and Kyiv, and stare down the Ukrainians and tell them to surrender. And they'd just fold.
Putin didn't want to have to actually use those weapons! Not on the Ukrainian people who are so closely related to his own people and from whom the Russians came.
He is a smart man, but as others say in here, he overestimated the ability of the Russian army to make advances, and underestimated the guerrilla tactics of the Ukrainians armed with armour piercing weapons.
