The longer this war drag on the more sanction, global condemnation and action and increase casualty on both side with Ukraine seen rightful as martyr defending their entire country and lowering the moral of the Russian soldiers who were forced by Putin to fight a war they didn't have too.

Had Putin taken Kyiv in a few days and toppled the government which meant minimal blood with Ukraine surrendering, he would had a better chance to "peacefully" action his plan to change the Ukraine government. Even if he does now take Ukraine in the next few days or this week, I think the damage has already been done and he actually lost the war.
