You cannot appease these madmen like Putin who have a weak military but lots of nukes.

Russia had no right at all to bully Ukraine and try to overturn the will of the Ukrainian people to join the EU, and it had even less right to invade and annex the Crimea and invade the Donbas region and create a couple of puppet states.

Putin has his eyes on conquering as much Ukrainian territory as he can. He clearly wanted Ukraine as a puppet state to start with, and when he couldn't achieve that he has proceeded with a teritorial grab since 2014.

The mistake the west made since 2014 was in appeasing Russia and allowing Putin to think he could continue with his aggression and campaign of conquest. It is only the fact that the Russian military is a weak 'paper tiger' that has come up against a very motivated and determined Ukrainian opponent that has foiled his plans.
