In retrospect, the US attached the highest importance to denying Russians a victory in Mariupol by deploying such a top gun to supervise the operation. To be sure, his attempted escape would have been known to the Pentagon, which probably explains Def Secretary Austin’s sheepish phone call to Russian Def Minister Sergei Shoigu on Friday (their first conversation after the Russian operation began in Ukraine!)”
