The Russians don't mind at all, NATO is a defensive alliance against attacks from hostile countries on one of the members. They have no interest in attacking Russia. What worries Putin is the presence of democracies on the borders of Russia which is why he has been hell bent on assassinating or jailing the political opposition and trying to undermine and overthrow democratically elected leaders of neighbouring states and replace them with puppet autocracies. Putin is terrified that he might lose power which is why he spends so much time trying to suppress popular protest movements, much like Xi Jinping and the CCP.
