I think the Russians said at the outset that occupation of the entire country was not the objective.
10000 troops near Kyiv was not a sufficient grouping to take the city. I dont recall Kyiv looking like it was about to fall.

The defences prepared by Ukraine with NATO help in the east are numerous and in depth. To me it looks like the Russians have adapted their tactics following pretty heavy losses in the first phase and are making greater progress in the 2nd phase.

We haven't seen any effective counterattack by Ukraine yet. Maybe in the summer who knows.
