That's why this was always intended to be a quick and surgical invasion. Take Kyiv, take out the government, partition the country allocating the areas rich in resources to Russia, and then brazen it out with the West - thinking that it would be 2014 all over again, that the West would implement some mild sanctions and continue doing business with him.

What has transpired is now his worst nightmare. Europe has gone dog on him, he is suffering huge losses from over 100 days of brutal warfare, and his army is now hopelessly mired in Ukraine. One of the biggest military and geopolitical blunders in modern military history, and all due to the nature of his regime. He's a dictator who is surrounded by 'yes men' who told him what he wanted to hear prior to the invasion, the intelligence was faulty, and the systemic corruption in the Russian state meant that his military equipment was in a dilapidated state, and the army units were severely undermanned.

Whilst I am always very cautious about the consensus view in an geo political argument , I have to say that's not a bad synopsis of the situation.
