Well they can before they die, and history isn't written only by those who were actually there. There are records. Oral, written, there is corroborating evidence, there are a lot of resources.
Putiin's a lousy historian. You seem to have no idea either, with your oversimplifications about how history is ascertained.
Even less about how Putin will be viewed.
