When you go to defend your country by fighting in the cities, your cities will be destroyed, that is obvious.

Poland in WW2 did not fight in or around the cities as they did not want civilians killed (makes sense) or cities destroyed. (Warsaw was an exception, but only for a week and a half).

In Ukraine, when there are Ukrainian snipers in buildings, shooting and killing Russian generals, the buildings are going to be targeted (and destroyed). Makes sense.
