I find I have to amend something I wrote four years ago, in a different context, which was this:

"Europe really has a lot to thank Russia for. They saw off Napoleon and Hitler plus they endured total misery to prove that Communist/Socialist dictatorship really doesn't work"

I'll amend that to append the following:
"Now they will likely endure some more years of misery to prove that a post-Communist dictatorship hasn't served them well either.
But we must never forget that out of that country, oppressed by years of feudalism under the Tsars and what followed, has come some of the greatest music, literature and dramatic art the world has seen. And that has sprung from the soul of the Russian people in spite of its tragedy of government leadership."
