One example of not fighting in or defending the cities is Poland (during the German invasion at the start of WW2)
    - I posted something about this topic before but got some ignorant and uneducated responses..

The Polish armies did not fight in the cities, therefore they avoided civilian deaths. That was their strategy.
And this was a massive invasion of the country (almost 2 million Germans invaded, plus occupation by the Soviets from the East from Sept 17)

Cities like Poznan, Lodz. Krakow and so on, had zero bombing from the air (except for some army barracks (which were empty) and railway tracks.
Virtually no civilians were killed (zero in Krakow), and the cities were untouched.
Stanislaw Maczek and the large Krakow army - for example - fought south of the city and also in around the Carpathians, but nowhere near the city.

Warsaw, however was defended by the Poles for about a week at the end of the September campaign, before Polish General Rummel said
enough is enough (destruction) and surrendered.
The Germans had been dropping leaflets from planes appealing to the defenders in Warsaw to surrender
(to avoid further destruction and loss of life) for about a week previously.
