Worst history lesson ever.
Why would control of Stalingrad ensure control of the entire Volga River, rather than just that local stretch? And even if it did, why would control of the Volga River ensure control of the oil fields in the Caucasus? The two were entirely unrelated theatres of conflict, being waged by entirely separate Army Groups. Stalingrad was always about symbolism (the name of the city) not strategic value, which was why German military leadership was unhappy with Hitler's obsession with the city.
All of which misses the more relevant point: why do you think Ukrainian cities are strategically unimportant to Ukraine in this war?
